How Did It All Begin?

Az ünnep gyökerei több mint ezer évre nyúlnak vissza. 1000 karácsonyán, vagy 1001 januárjában koronázták királlyá Istvánt, aki megszilárdította a magyar államot, és a kereszténységet választotta a nép hivatalos vallásának. Ő lett az első magyar király, és az „államalapító” címmel tisztelik.

The origins of this holiday go back more than a thousand years. On Christmas Day in the year 1000, or January 1, 1001, Stephen was crowned king. He consolidated the Hungarian state and chose Christianity as its official faith. He became Hungary’s first king and is honored as the “founder of the state.”

Ma augusztus 20. Magyarország egyik legnagyobb nemzeti ünnepe. Budapesten katonai díszszemle, zászlófelvonás, kulturális programok, és este hatalmas tűzijáték várja az embereket. Az ország számos városában tartanak kenyérszentelést, fesztiválokat és családi programokat.

Today, August 20 is one of Hungary’s greatest national holidays. In Budapest, people attend a military parade, a ceremonial flag-raising, cultural programs, and in the evening, a spectacular fireworks show. Across the country, towns hold bread blessings, festivals, and family gatherings.

An Interesting Fact

A Szent Jobb, István király mumifikálódott jobb keze, ma is látható a budapesti Szent István-bazilikában, és minden évben körmenetet tartanak vele.

The Holy Right - the mummified right hand of King Stephen - is still preserved today in St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, and every year it is carried in a ceremonial procession.
