Did you know that October 6 is a national day of mourning in Hungary?
Ezen a napon az ország az aradi vértanúkra emlékezik - tizenhárom bátor katonára, akik a szabadságért haltak meg 1849-ben. Ők voltak azok, akik nem adták fel a független Magyarország álmát, még akkor sem, amikor minden reménytelennek tűnt.
On this day, the country remembers the Arad martyrs - thirteen brave soldiers who died for freedom in 1849. They were the ones who never gave up the dream of an independent Hungary, even when everything seemed hopeless.
Mi történt 1848–49-ben? What happened in 1848–49?
1848-ban a magyarok forradalmat indítottak az Osztrák Birodalom ellen. Céljuk az volt, hogy Magyarország szabad és független legyen. A magyar hadsereg sokáig bátran harcolt, de végül az osztrákok az orosz hadsereg segítségével legyőzték őket.
In 1848, the Hungarians started a revolution against the Austrian Empire. Their goal was for Hungary to be free and independent. The Hungarian army fought bravely for a long time, but in the end, the Austrians defeated them with help from the Russian army.
A vereség után sok magyar vezetőt elfogtak. 1849. október 6-án tizenhárom tábornokot Aradon, és Batthyány Lajost, az első magyar miniszterelnököt Pesten végezték ki. Ez volt a megtorlás a szabadságharc után, és ez a nap örökre beírta magát Magyarország történelmébe. Arad ma Románia területén található, de akkor még Magyarországhoz tartozott.
After the defeat, many Hungarian leaders were captured. On October 6, 1849, thirteen generals were executed in Arad, and Lajos Batthyány, the first Hungarian prime minister, was executed in Pest. This was the punishment after the War of Independence, and this day is forever written into Hungary’s history. Today, Arad is in the territory of Romania, but at that time it belonged to Hungary.

How do we remember this day in Hungary today?
Ma, október 6-án, nemzeti gyásznapot tartunk. Az emberek gyertyát gyújtanak, virágot visznek, és koszorút helyeznek el az aradi vértanúk emlékműveinél. Az iskolákban a diákok verseket mondanak és dalokat énekelnek, így emlékeznek a hősökre. Sok városban ezen a napon csend van. Az emberek így mutatják, hogy tisztelik a múlt hőseit.
Today, on October 6, we hold a national day of mourning. People light candles, bring flowers, and place wreaths at the monuments of the Arad martyrs. In schools, students recite poems and sing songs to remember the heroes. In many towns, there is silence on this day. People show their respect for the heroes of the past in this way.

In Arad stands the Monument of the Arad Martyrs, where a remembrance ceremony is held every year.
Budapesten a Batthyány-örökmécses az egyik legismertebb hely, ahol sokan gyertyát gyújtanak október 6-án.
In Budapest, the Batthyány Eternal Flame is one of the most famous places where people light candles on October 6.
Szolnokon egy emlékparkban tizenhárom fából készült kopjafa emlékezik a tábornokokra.
In Szolnok, a memorial park features thirteen wooden grave posts (“kopjafák”) for the generals.
Gyulán és Szegeden is van szobor és emléktábla, ahol virágot lehet elhelyezni.
In Gyula and Szeged, there are also statues and memorial plaques where people can lay flowers.
Répceszentgyörgyön és Ópályiban is áll emlékmű a vértanúk tiszteletére. In Répceszentgyörgy and Ópályi, monuments have also been built in honor of the martyrs.
A határon túl, Révkomáromban (Szlovákiában) is található egy emlékmű két aradi vértanú, Török Ignác és Lenkey János emlékére.
Across the border, in Komárno (Slovakia), there is a monument dedicated to two Arad martyrs, Ignác Török and János Lenkey.
Ezek a helyek segítenek megérteni, hogy az október 6-i események ma is élnek az emberek emlékezetében Magyarországon és a környező országokban.
These places help us understand that the events of October 6 still live in people’s memories in Hungary and the surrounding countries.
